A family-friendly novel companion and book discussion guide for ages 9-14
Some family book club picks are fun and light. This one is a little heavier — and it’s exactly the kind of book worth reading together instead of handing your kid to read alone. Rain Reign by Ann M. Martin is one of the most quietly powerful books I’ve built a kit for, and it belongs on every family’s shelf.
Why I Picked It
Rain Reign is a book about difference, empathy, and unconditional love, told entirely from inside the head of a girl whose brain works differently than the people around her. It’s the kind of story that changes how a kid sees a classmate, a sibling, or even themselves — and it does that without ever feeling like a lesson. Ann M. Martin (yes, the Baby-Sitters Club author) writes Rose’s voice with so much specificity and heart that you finish the book feeling like you truly understood her.
Who It’s For
This one is best for a slightly older or more emotionally ready reader in your 9-14 range — kids who are ready for a story with real emotional weight, not just adventure. It’s an especially meaningful pick for families with a neurodivergent reader, or for any family who wants their kid to walk away with a deeper sense of empathy for people who experience the world differently. Dog lovers will be fully on board from page one.
Why Parents Will Like It
This is the book club pick that gives you permission to have the harder conversations — about difference, about misunderstanding, about what it actually looks like to advocate for someone you love.
